Frequently Asked Questions

  • Therapy refers to a supportive, talk-based process that helps you care for your mental, emotional, and relational wellbeing. The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably, but they can have slightly different focuses:

    • Counselling addresses specific concerns or life transitions, providing practical tools, strategies, and emotional support.

    • Psychotherapy typically goes deeper, exploring long-standing patterns, early experiences, and inner conflicts to foster greater self-understanding and lasting change.

In practice, these approaches may overlap. I draw from both, depending on your unique needs and goals.

  • Therapy can be both a focused, short-term process or a longer journey of exploration.

For some people, a short-term, outcome-oriented approach—such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)—is a good fit. This often means working together for a set number of sessions to focus on a specific concern, build practical skills, and support meaningful change in daily life.

For others, therapy naturally evolves into longer-term work. This might mean exploring deeper patterns, relationships, and life experiences at a pace that allows for reflection and integration. Longer-term therapy can create space not just for symptom relief, but also for greater self-understanding, healing, and growth.

There is no one “right” length of therapy, as it depends on your needs, goals, and what feels supportive for you. Together, we’ll revisit your goals and check in along the way to make sure our work is still serving you in the ways you need.

  • You don’t need a doctor’s referral to start therapy. If you’re ready to begin or simply curious about whether therapy is right for you, feel free to book a consultation to see if it might be right for you.

Some insurance benefits may require a doctor’s referral for reimbursement, in which case I recommend checking with your specific insurance plan or administrator for those details.

  • Yes! I work with college and university students seeking ongoing support beyond the scope of short-term campus counselling. Having been a student myself through college, undergraduate, and graduate programs, I understand firsthand the unique pressures of student life.

Common themes include stress, anxiety, identity exploration, relationship challenges (both peer and romantic), and adjusting to difficult life events—academic or otherwise. Sessions are available in-person in London or virtually across Ontario.

  • Session fees ($150/hr) are due after each appointment and can be paid by e-transfer (to britney@balbodhiwell.com) or securely by credit card through Jane Payments. A receipt will be provided following payment for insurance reimbursement.

Sliding scale: A limited number of reduced-fee spots are available for clients experiencing financial hardship. Please reach out if this applies to you.

  • Direct billing is available with a number of insurance providers, but coverage depends on the rules of each individual plan. Please check with your insurer to confirm eligibility. If you’d like to participate in direct billing, let your therapist know—a signed consent form will be required specific to your insurance plan and it’s associated eClaims portal.

  • Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice (48 hours is appreciated) to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Missed or late cancellations may be charged the full fee unless: the session is moved online, is rescheduled within 7 days, or there are extenuating compassionate reasons (e.g. sudden illness, emergency, bereavement). Insurance typically does not cover missed appointments.

  • I’m honoured when clients want to refer someone they care about. At the same time, I hold strong ethical boundaries to protect everyone’s privacy and wellbeing. If a friend, partner, or family member is seeking therapy, I’ll carefully consider whether it’s appropriate to work with them. In some cases—especially when relationships are close or content may overlap—I may refer them to a trusted colleague to avoid any conflicts of interest and ensure all clients receive the highest standard of care.
